To mark the publication, in November 2016, of Robbie Robertson’s autobiography, Testimony, Andy spoke to the former guitarist and songwriter with The Band for the Today programme on BBC Radio 4. Only six minutes of their conversation was broadcast on Today. But here is their full 45 minute chat. In a wide ranging interview, Robbie talks about his early days, as a sixteen year-old, playing around the roadhouses, nightclubs, and dives of the southern states in Ronnie Hawkins’s band; gives his personal perspective of his controversial electric tour with Bob Dylan in 1966; speaks frankly of the addiction problems which bedevilled The Band and which led eventually to the break-up of the group; and their necessary but glorious and star-studded farewell concert – The Last Waltz – in San Francisco in 1976.
